Proper lifting techniques are important for everyone not just those lifting heavy items every day. When I worked in a chiropractic office you don't know how many times I heard a seemingly strong, fit person say, "All I did was bend down to pick up the newspaper and it threw my back out." They would be in horrible pain and unable to straighten. We all know it wasn't the newspaper that caused the issue the newspaper was just the final straw. Proper lifting and bending is an important habit we ALL need to develop.
There are basically three rules:
1. Bend with your knees not your back
2. Keep the load close to your body (Keep arms and elbows near the body.)
3. Don't twist (Change direction by moving your feet not by twisting.)
